Barrie man's death linked to COVID outbreak at RVH

Health unit reports 89 Barrie residents among 281 new COVID cases in region since Friday

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 281 new COVID-19 cases and one death since Friday.

The death reported today was a Barrie man between 65 and 79 years old. He died on April 15, and his case was linked to the outbreak at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre's cardiac/renal unit.

There are 1,090 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.

The health unit has reported 2,320 variant cases confirmed to date, with 571 of those cases still active.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 9,456 cases of COVID-19 with 7,755 of those cases recovered and 216 cases ending in death. 

There are 47 people from Simcoe County and one person from Muskoka hospitalized with COVID-19, which includes 11 new hospitalizations since Friday. 

To date, 139,386 people in Simcoe-Muskoka region have received their first dose of a vaccination against COVID-19, which is about 22 per cent of the region's population. 

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified): 

  • Collingwood (4): Three youth under 18 years old and one person between 45 and 64 years old. Two cases are outbreak-related and two are linked to close contact.
  • Wasaga Beach (6): Two youth under 18 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, two people between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Three cases are linked to close contact.
  • Clearview (2): One person between 18 and 34 years old and two people between 45 and 64 years old. One case is linked to close contact. 
  • Barrie (89): Eleven youth under 18 years old, 37 people between 18 and 34 years old, 12 people between 35 and 44 years old, 17 people between 45 and 64 years old, nine people between 65 and 79 years old and three person over 79 years old. Twenty-eight cases are linked to close contact, seven were community-acquired, one was outbreak-related, and one was linked to travel.
  • Springwater (5): One person between 35 and 44, and four people between 45 and 64 years old. One case was community-acquired and one is linked to close contact. 
  • Innisfil (31): Six youth under 18 years old, 12 people between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, 10 people between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Ten cases are attributed to community transmission, seven are linked to close contact, and one is outbreak-related. 
  • Bradford West Gwillimbury (54): Eleven youth under 18 years old, eight people between 18 and 34 years old, 13 people between 35 and 44 years old, 20 people between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Ten cases are linked to close contact, four are community-acquired, and four are outbreak-related.
  • Orillia (12): One youth under 18 years old, five people between 18 and 34 years old, four people between 45 and 64 years old and two people between 65 and 79 years old. Five cases are linked to close contact and two were community-acquired.
  • Oro-Medonte (6): One youth under 18 years old, one person between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, one person between 56 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Four cases are linked to close contact. 
  • Severn (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old. 
  • Midland (3): Two youth under 18 years old and one person between 45 and 64 years old. Two cases are linked to close contact and one was community-acquired.
  • Tay (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old whose case is linked to close contact.
  • Tiny (8): Three youth under 18, one person between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old , and two people between 45 and 64 years old. Six cases are linked to close contact and one was community-acquired.
  • Essa (6): Two youth under 18 years old, one person between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, and two people between 45 and 64 years old. One case was community-acquired and two are linked to close contact.
  • New Tecumseth (34): Eight youth under 17 years old, 10 people between 18 and 34 years old, eight people between 35 and 44 years old, five people between 45 and 64 years old, and three people over 79 years old. Four cases are attributed to community transmission, and 12 are linked to close contact.
  • Adjala-Tosorontio (7): Two people between 34 and 45 years old, three people between 45 and 64 years old, and two people between 65 and 79 years old. Two cases are linked to close contact and one to community transmission.
  • There are 11 new cases in Muskoka, including five in Gravenhurst, four in Bracebridge, one in Huntsville, and one in Lake of Bays.
  • One case is listed with location information pending.
