Barrie Ford gives 4,965-pound gift to food bank

Mike Stollery, owner of Barrie Ford, Barrie Chrysler and 400 Chrysler dropped off two vans full of food this morning

Santa came early to the Barrie Food Bank.

Mike Stollery, owner of Barrie Ford, Barrie Chrysler and 400 Chrysler along with about 10 staff members, dropped off two vans full of donations this morning, amounting to 4,965 pounds of food.

“It started with a few team members and it just kind grew. We’ve been doing this together for more than 10 years,” said Stollery.

In addition to donating to the Barrie Food Bank, Stollery also donates annually to Barrie and District Christmas Cheer and the David Busby Centre.

“We just like to help them all. Our little goal is to try to inspire others. Some people choose one or two. We support them all in whatever way we can,” he said.

“We’d like other business leaders to take a minute and think about it. If everybody gets involved, it makes it easier.”

Stollery’s donation is a combination of donations from the public, as well as purchased items. For the purchased portion, Stollery estimates they spent about $12,000 this time around.

Barrie Food Bank executive director Peter Sundborg was on hand for the donation and said, so far, the Christmas Food Drive has collected about 65,000 pounds of food, getting them a little less than halfway toward their goal of 200,000 pounds this year.

“This week and next will be our busiest weeks of the year,” he said. “We’re right on target for where we want to be.”
