Barrie driver charged with assault, over 80 after Highway 11 stop

On Monday January 11, 2016 at approximately 9:30 p.m. the Almaguin Highlands Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was called to a traffic complaint on Highway 11, in the southbound lane.

STRONG TOWNSHIP – On Monday January 11, 2016 at approximately 9:30 p.m. the Almaguin Highlands Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was called to a traffic complaint on Highway 11, in the southbound lane. 

OPP stopped the vehicle near Robins Road and subsequently arrested the driver for exceeding the legal limit for alcohol. 

While in police custody, the driver [is alleged to have] resisted arrest and assaulted the officer.

The driver, Byron WILLIAMS, 27 of Barrie Ontario was charged with the following offences:

  • Driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in blood, contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Fail to comply with probation order, contrary to section 733.1(1) of the CC
  • Assault a peace officer, contrary to section 270(1)(a) of the CC
  • Novice driver – Blood alcohol content above zero, contrary to section 44.1(3) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)
  • Speeding, contrary to section 128 of the HTA

The accused was released from custody and is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Thursday, January 28, 2016 in Sundridge Ontario.
