A 19-year-old college student who was home sick in bed with a cold Thursday morning was awakened by a loud banging at the front door of her O'Shaughnessy Crescent home.

She thought the noise was her dad or brother.

"I was sleeping. I woke up to slamming and then I called out 'hello' and I heard someone run out of the house and slam the door behind them," she said, declining to be identified for safety concerns.

The young woman called her dad who called police.

"We responded to a break and enter in progress call about 9:40 this morning," said Const. Darryl Vanschubert. "We arrived on scene within minutes of the call and the suspect or suspects had already made good their escape."

Police called out the Canine Unit but police dog Thor was unable to track the suspect or suspects.

"There may be more than one suspect, we don't know," said Vanschubert. "We canvassed the area and neighbours didn't see or hear anything."

The Emergency Response Unit was also on scene along with a Forensic Identification Unit officer who dusted the front door for fingerprints.

The homeowner feels lucky that she heard the door being busted down which alerted her before the break-in went too far.

"It was a very unusual time, in the middle of the day.  At least I was home so nothing got taken. That was good," she said through sniffles from a bad cold.  "It would've been bad if I didn't hear them."

She says she has never experienced anything like this before but the crime may be part of a bigger picture.

Police are investigating a possible link between this entry and a rash of daytime break-ins - three in the past 24 hours in the area of Toronto and Dalton Streets.
