Mrs. Alicia Eliot, social studies teacher from Barrie Central Collegiate, has been chosen to participate in the Teachers institute on Canadian Parliamentary Democracy in Ottawa from February 21-26, 2016.

Through a competitive process, Eliot was one of 70 teachers chosen across Canada for this unique opportunity.

The Teachers Institute on Canadian Parliamentary Democracy offers chosen teachers the chance to visit Parliament Hill and gain an insider’s look on how Canadian Parliament works.

Participants will engage in critical discussions about key issues in citizenship and parliamentary democracy and meet with senior parliamentary officials.

“We very proud that one of our teachers has been selected for this program,” said Greg Brucker, principal of Barrie Central. “I am confident that she will embrace this opportunity and use her experience to inform her teaching moving forward.”

As part of the program, Eliot will collect creative ideas and tools for teaching and sharing with students and other teachers about Parliament, governance, democracy and citizenship. “I am looking forward to the opportunity to gain a unique perspective on Canadian Parliament,” says Eliot. “This experience will allow me to use realistic scenarios to help students learn and add to their understanding of our government.”

Eliot teaches law, geography and civics and careers.

Participating teachers will be officially recognized for their excellence in teaching and awarded a certificate from both the Speaker of the Senate and the House of Commons.
