Thirteen-year-old Oscar Oliver from Barrie recently returned from Poland, where he packed and handed out another 350 new backpacks, filled with supplies, toys, games and gifts, to Ukrainian war refugee children at a special “Kids for Kids” event held at the Warsaw Zoo.
While Oscar was in Poland he had the great honour to be invited, as a VIP, to the Canadian Embassy in Warsaw to meet the embassy team and to present and discuss his “Buy a Backpack” campaign.
Oscar has one more mission planned for this year. He will be going back to Poland in November to pack the next consignment of 600 backpacks, educational items, various gifts and sensory toys for sick kids, which are being shipped by sea freight, and to deliver them to the children at refugee centres throughout the country.
This will take Oscar to a total of 1,342 filled backpacks. His original goal when he started his “Buy a Backpack” campaign six months ago was 200. From small seeds, big flowers can grow.
“There are now nearly four million refugees in Poland and so many of them are children. They are scared and many are sick and have disabilities. I quickly realized that even an item as small as a backpack with small personal gifts can mean so much to others in need and my “Kids for Kids” attitude to life is really working,” said Oscar.
“These backpacks and gifts might be the only Christmas present the children can look forward to this year,” he said.
Oscar is now raising funds towards the cost of shipping the one ton of supplies to Poland, the cost of logistics, transportation and distribution within Poland, and the cost of his travel to Poland with his guardian. To support Oscar you can visit his website donation page at www.oscaroliver.org.
