The City of Barrie received a rating of 5 Blooms - Gold and a special mention for Plants and Floral Displays during the 2023 National/International Symposium and Awards Ceremonies in Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo, Alberta. The City of Barrie participated in the Circle of Excellence - Evaluated category.

Over the summer, trained volunteer judges travelled to participating communities to evaluate the overall contributions of municipal council and departments; industry; businesses and the private sector – including volunteer efforts – regarding the following criteria: Community Appearance, Environmental Action, Heritage Conservation, Tree Management, Landscape and Plant & Floral Displays.

Following their evaluation, volunteer judges Susan Ellis and Tina Liu wrote:

“The vast variety of floral displays helped to create a welcoming atmosphere in the City. The diversity of plant material is impressive from the parks, the community gardens, and the CiB participating projects, to the naturalized areas by the waterfront. The experienced horticultural staff at the municipal greenhouse facility produce high-quality plant materials for the city parks which is essential to the successful floral program.”

Within the actual context of climate changes and environmental concerns, communities involved in the program can be proud of their efforts, which provide real and meaningful environmental solutions and benefit all of society.
