August 20 is the deadline for a conditional offer on the Barrie Central Collegiate property located on Dunlop Street West.

The Simcoe County District School Board has chosen a buyer who has until late August to decide whether to move forward with the sale.

"Effectively there's an accepted agreement of purchase and sale but right now the buyer is in its conditional period," said Shannon MacIntyre, the school board's real estate broker.  "It's going through its investigations to satisfy itself that they can in fact do what they want to do on that site."

If the buyer decides to proceed, its expected the school board would close the deal in the fall.

Right now, MacIntyre says the buyer is likely conducting investigations which could include environmental or geo-technical investigations, such as testing the soil.

The sale of the beloved high school property was a closed bid process, cloaked in secrecy still, where numerous offers came in sealed envelopes which were all opened at the same time and evaluated.

MacIntyre doesn't represent the buyers and says she doesn't know what they're "master plan" is for the property.

She also can't identify the prospective buyers.

"They're new to town. They're not local developers."

This is the fourth school sale for MacIntyre's firm, Sutton Group Incentive Realty, but it's the first time there have been students at the school during the process.

"The other ones were empty," said MacIntyre. "It was a new process for us because we needed to be sensitive to the fact that it had an active student body."
