Area students medal in seven categories at Skills Ontario Competition

​The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) sent 37 students to the 2018 Skills Ontario Competition, held in Toronto from May 7 to 9. SCDSB competitors won medals in seven categories: three gold, three silver and one bronze. 

The event promotes skilled trade and technology careers to youth by hosting skilled trades competitions for over 2,000 students from across Ontario in more than 67 contest areas. 

Medals were awarded to: 

  • Sabrina Digaetano from Bear Creek Secondary School – Gold in Aesthetics
  • Matt Jack from Barrie North Collegiate Institute – Gold in Auto Collision Repair
  • Jessica St. Amand and Liam Stone from Innisdale Secondary School – Gold in 2D Character Animation
  • Sarah Johnson from Innisdale Secondary School – Silver in Restaurant Service
  • Jade Slaughter from Bear Creek Secondary School – Silver in Job Interview
  • Jarod Whittick from Banting Memorial High School – Silver in Outdoor Powered Equipment
  • Gabe Langford from Bradford District High School – Bronze in Cabinetmaking

St. Amand, Stone and Jack will represent the province of Ontario at the national competition held in Edmonton at the beginning of June. This is Digaetano’s second consecutive gold medal at the Skills Ontario Competition.

“Our students’ accomplishments at the Skills Ontario Competition are a reflection of their hard work as well as the work of the staff who supported them throughout this process,” says Steve Blake, director of education. “We are extremely proud of their efforts and of how they represented the SCDSB.”

The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) and the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program provide significant support to the Skills Ontario Competition.
