On April 6 and 7, student scientists in Grades 4 to 12 competed in the Simcoe County Regional Science and Technology Fair, held at Bear Creek Secondary School.

This year, Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) students received over 80 awards, including three Grand Awards:

  • Best of Computer and Engineering Sciences – Pot Hole Detector!by Ella Devillers, Mapleview Heights ES
  • Best of Human and Health Sciences – Crickets vs. Cows by Margot Hobson, Mountain View ES
  • Best of Earth and Environmental Sciences – Filtration of Smogby Emily Goodson, Cookstown Central PS

Additionally, four Cookstown Central PS students have been chosen to attend the Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF), happening May 12 to 19 in Ottawa.

“Along with Vice-Chairperson Jodi Lloyd, it was an honour to help present some of the awards at the Simcoe County Fair this year,” notes Steve Blake, Director of Education, SCDSB. “We are continually impressed by the calibre of work our students put into their projects.”

“Cookstown Central students really embraced the science fair this year,” adds Karen Dockeray, Teacher at Cookstown Central PS. “The range of projects was broad and the imagination put into their projects is staggering. This year, students really outdid themselves, our whole school supports their efforts and I couldn't be more proud of all of our winners!”

In addition, Rohan Mehta, a Grade 8 student at Admiral Collingwood ES, has been invited to take part in an opportunity at the 2018 International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh from May 13 to 19. Rohan was selected for this program from all Grade 8 students in Canada. Rohan will talk about the project he took to CWSF in Regina last year, and will observe and learn from other Team Canada members as well as international Grade 8 students.
