Do you know of a girl or woman, in Barrie, who has gone above and beyond in service for her community?

Barrie MPP Ann Hoggarth is seeking nominations for Leading Woman, Leading Girls Building Communities Recognition Program 2017-18.

Hoggarth says the award will “acknowledge and celebrate girls and women in leadership roles who improve the lives of others in their community.”

The recognition was offered for the first time in Barrie last year with three girls and 13 women honoured.

“One recipient organized a baseball league for young women. Another was a paramedic who lives with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and later wrote a book about it,” according to Hoggarth.

"In all cases, these nominees would be positive role models and be great mentors who inspire others," Hoggarth said.

Nominees must have worked to improve the lives of others in one of these ways:

  1. Breaking down barriers and encouraging girls to get involved in careers where women are underrepresented.
  2. Actively promoting issues such as equality, diversity, healthy equal relationships, preventing violence and reducing racism and discrimination.
  3. Encouraging girls to participate in any part of public or community service.
  4. Mentoring, coaching, leading events or organizations and being a leader in their communities.

Nominations will be accepted up until Dec. 22 with an announcement on March 3.
