After nearly three decades, the owners of the Barkley Square on Yonge Street have sold the restaurant and retired from the business.

The doors to the cozy, cottage-like establishment north of highway 89 closed on April 6.

"Through this simple message the owners would like to say 'Thank you for your patronage,'" a message on the restaurant's website and Facebook said. "The growth and success we have experienced over the 29 years is because of valued customers like you. It has been a pleasure serving you."

That's a lot of first dates, anniversaries, birthdays, family dinners and wedding receptions over 29 years.

"Shame to see it go," said Innisfil Mayor Gord Wauchope. "I'm hoping it's going to remain a restaurant. It's an historic place for the town."

Word is a businessman from Toronto bought the restaurant and is looking for someone to operate it.

So the culinary landmark rich in history will rise again.

Barkley Square first opened its doors for business on the May 24 weekend in 1947.

William Ronald Barkley was the founder and chef and he operated it with his sister Irene.

Barkley received the first liquor permit in 1957 but it only allowed him to use alcohol for cooking, not serving to customers.

Barkley Square has attracted a clientele of royalty, celebrities and dignitaries including Prince Andrew, film director Norman Jewison and actor Alan Thicke.

The Innisfil Mayor says it was a restaurant for special occasions and he's enjoyed many at the quaint, cozy eatery.

"It was a place to celebrate anniversaries.," said Mayor Wauchope. "Always great food and the atmosphere was fantastic, especially at Christmas when it was totally decorated. It was a real treat to go in there at Christmas."
