Action! 10 films over four days means Reel Stories festival is rolling

Two of the films being shown over the next few days are Honeyland and The Cave, both nominated for Oscars

Highlighting some of the world’s best documentaries and dramas, the screens at the Uptown Theater will come to life again for the popular Barrie Film Festival event.

Reel Stories, now in its 16th year, is a four-day event at the Dunlop Street West theatre featuring films by international storytellers. The festival, which began Thursday afternoon and runs until Sunday, includes thought-provoking documentaries and award-winning films.

Barrie Film Festival executive director Claudine Benoit told BarrieToday the 10 films being shown are spread out as far as topics, but all are picked by the team she works with.

“There are a number of people on the committee and we tend to binge watch a lot of great films and documentaries,” Benoit said. "The best way to be ready for the event is to watch as many international films as possible and see what is acclaimed out there at the time.”

Two of the films being shown over the next few days are Honeyland and The Cave, both nominated for Oscars.

Honeyland deals in part with wild bee-keeping, isolation and conflict, while The Cave is based on the female doctors in war-torn Syria who work underground to help those in need.

Benoit says she believes having movies that are topical and successful are keys to a great film festival.

“In terms of themes, there is a good cross-section of what is topical and current all centred on interesting people that are passionate, driven and dedicated, whether it is to human rights, the truth, their art, a special feat or exposing threats to the natural balance,” she said.

“Seeing what is being showcased at other film fests around the world is also crucial as people in our area want to see great movies on the big screen," Benoit added. "Movies that make you talk and discuss afterwards are always a joy to have."

Reel Stories runs until Sunday at the Uptown Theater, which is located at 55 Dunlop St. W.
