A Taste of Barrie: Harvest and Thyme (7 photos)

A Taste of Barrie is Anne-Marie Hardie's bi-weekly look at the unique people, food and culture at the heart of Barrie. This and other great columns can be found under the "Columns" category on BarrieToday.com. This week's A Taste of Barrie column focuses on how one woman is bringing fresh food and time back to the Barrie community.

Food is a vital part of our daily routine. The right foods can boost our immunity, give us energy and increase both muscle and bone mass.

However; choosing and preparing these healthy foods take time, and in our get up and go lifestyle we tend to reach for convenient carbohydrate and fat heavy food.

Jessika Heinemann, Founder and Owner, Harvest and Thyme was well aware of both the urgency and difficulty of changing the way that we eat.

Having had a high stress, demanding job as an Environmental Scientist, Heinemann struggled for years with both her weight and other health concerns.

Feeling drained and overwhelmed, she turned to naturopaths and learned the power of eating the right foods.

It was this new discovery that led to her pursuing an education in holistic nutrition and effectively carving out a new career path.

“There is too much misinformation, too many 'diets,'” says Heinemann. “When it comes to eating the right foods, too many people feel like they are spinning their wheels, they are missing this one important link, food - we are what we eat.”

Harvest and Thyme is designed to help clients meet their nutritional needs through a healthy meal delivery service.

Armed with nutritional knowledge and partnered with wonderful local farmers and food suppliers, Heinemann is driven to bring the ultimate in food services to her clients.

Clients can opt from a variety of services including nutritional consultations, cooking classes and a meal delivery service delivered to either their home or place at work.

One company who has jumped on board with the meal delivery service is local public relations firm Catalyst Communications Choreography.

Owner Amanda Sutton noticed how both herself and her employees were constantly grabbing carbohydrates to provide that instant burst of energy.

Sutton knew there was a better way, and so she made the decision to engage Harvest and Thyme services for both herself and her team.

“PR and social media is an on-demand, fast paced, environment, it’s very easy to get caught up with some intense work sessions,” says Sutton. “Knowing that Jessika has taken the care to select fresh, local, healthy food that also fuels your body - as a working mom that often puts other’s needs first, that has been the most invaluable benefit to me.”

Three months into the program, the positive results are noticeable from the time saved from picking up and preparing meals to a newfound energy.

“Each practice we add to our daily routine ensures we’re not only keeping ourselves happier and more productive in our work. But ensuring that our clients too, are getting the best of what we have to offer,” says Sutton.

Harvest and Thyme’s meals are created using local, Non-GMO, seasonal, real food.

Heinemann strives to consider all details, from using whole salt and spices, to being mindful of how the materials that the food is both cooked an stored in.

Her goal is to help her clients achieve optimal health through making the link between lifestyle and food.
