Over the past few days, contractors from Vince Johnston House Raising and Moving have been preparing the Oro African Church to raise it off its deteriorating foundation where it has sat for nearly 170 years.

The Township of Oro-Medonte did more than raise the roof Tuesday, marking a major milestone in the restoration project of the Oro African Church.

Contractors from Vince Johnston House Raising and Moving have been preparing the church to raise it off its deteriorating foundation where it has sat for nearly 170 years.

On Tuesday, the church was carefully moved onto cribs where it will rest temporarily while the final archaeological work is completed and new foundation and sill logs are reinstated.

It is hoped that it will be reinstated on its new foundation prior to the onset of winter and to then allow for log repairs to be completed.

“This moment is of a historical significance,” said Oro-Medonte Mayor Harry Hughes.

“The work to restore the church would not have been possible without the dedication of all those involved. It is humbling to see the support received from across the Nation that made today’s milestone possible,” he said.

It is hoped that it will be reinstated on its new foundation prior to the onset of winter and to then allow for log repairs to be completed.
