The final outdoor Innisfil Farmers’ Market last week was supposed to be a celebration of Thanksgiving and the fall harvest.
Instead, it was a struggle for survival, in hilly temperatures and high winds that howled through the area, tipping over tents and displays in the parking lot of the South Innisfil Community Centre — a noticeable change in temperature from this week’s surge of warmer weather.
Only a handful of vendors braved the final day of the outdoor market Oct. 4. Dressed in jackets and toques, they offered shoppers an array of fresh local produce, baked goods and hand-crafted items just in time for Thanksgiving.
Beginning this week and for the next 11 weeks, the Innisfil Farmers’ Market will be held inside the Recreation Complex at Innisfil Beach Road and Yonge Street, from 2-7 p.m. every Thursday.
Shivering outside with a selection of cheesecakes and pies was Summer Oven Bakery owner Jaime Grant. She had already seen an entire display of cherry cheesecakes blown over by the wind, but was positive about the overall experience at the market, which opened in June.
“Innisfil’s growing. Not just the farmers’ market, but the number of visitors,” Grant said, noting some events scheduled over the summer season attracted more than 60 vendors.
She ended up giving away the smashed cheesecakes to shoppers happy to sample wind-damaged goods — and she encouraged everyone to come out to the new venue, indoors.
