MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS SOCIETY, SIMCOE MUSKOKA CHAPTER

The Multiple Sclerosis Society, Simcoe Muskoka Chapter is holding a flag raising at Barrie City Hall on May 1 at 11 a.m. to recognize May as National MS Awareness Month. A member of council and representatives from the local MS community will be present.

May is recognized nationally as MS Awareness Month by the MS Society which coincides with the Society’s largest fundraiser across Canada, the Mandarin MS Walk (May 7 in Barrie), and the Mothers’ Day Carnation Campaign. The MS Society of Canada works towards finding a cure and new treatment options, as well as supporting those who are currently living with MS.

The local Simcoe Muskoka Chapter supports people in the community living with MS by assisting them financially when purchasing mobility aids such as wheelchairs, walkers and scooters. Funds are also used to rent spaces for programming such as support groups and pay for supplies for educational workshops within Barrie.

Multiple sclerosis is a disease which affects the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). It most commonly strikes people who are between 15 and 40 years old and is the most common neurological disease among young adults in Canada. Three and a half times as many women as men are diagnosed, with an estimated 100,000 Canadians currently living with MS.
