In a final act of charity before shutting its doors for good, Barrie Central donated $2,300 to help fund the David Busby Street Centre Street Outreach Van on Wednesday morning.

The money was raised from a BCC concert in February as well as revenue left over from the alumni reunion in May.

"It's from the school to the community and so it's that last ability to touch the lives of youth and we'd like the name of Central to be prideful right to the end," said Joanne McLaurin, a Central grad.

Sarah Peddle, Executive Director of the Busby Centre, was joined by outreach worker Sue McVeay and Barrie Central Principal Greg Brucker for the cheque presentations.

"As people leave these doors from learning opportunities they go out into the real world and sometimes the real world isn't so great to them and so we're able to help them up in those ways," said Peddle.  "It's really a big cycle of looking after each other."

McVeay says there are a lot of people sleeping outside and the need is great, especially for hygiene items, extra water, toilet paper and blankets.

"We are in need of a lot of things on the van and this helps a lot," said McVeay. "Gives extra love to go around."

Staff and students are not only winding down the school year at Barrie Central, they are preparing to say farewell to the building for good.

Real estate agent Shannon MacIntyre confirms there is a buyer for Barrie's oldest high school.

The sale is conditional for the buyer to "perform its due diligence" according to MacIntyre.

The buyer is not from Barrie.
