A day to worship the ooey-gooey greatness of grilled cheese

There were long line-ups at the Grilled Cheese Social Eatery on Dunlop St. E. as Barrie residents appeared to honour the classic sandwich's day of recognition.

Or maybe they just love grilled cheese sandwiches.

Regardless, National Grilled Cheese Day is every Apr. 12 and if Wikipedia has it right the history of the humble lunch classic dates back to the early 1900s.

"Cooked bread and cheese is an ancient food according to food historians, popular across the world in many cultures. Evidence indicates that, in the U.S., the modern version of the grilled cheese sandwich originated in the 1920s when inexpensive sliced bread and American cheese became readily available."

What better place to get your ooey-gooey fix than the downtown Barrie eatery listed on the Food Network's top 10 Cheesiest Restaurants in Canada.

Grilled cheese greatness isn't what it used to be - it's even better.

There are no less than 17 different varieties of the cheesy comfort food on the Grilled Cheese Social Eatery's menu and a choice of eight different types of bread.
