26 Barrie residents among 71 new COVID cases reported in region today

Health unit also confirms death of New Tecumseth man between 45 and 64 years old

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 71 new COVID-19 cases in today's update (May 7). 

The death reported today was a man from New Tecumseth between 45 and 64 years old. He died on May 6 and his case was not linked to any outbreaks. 

There are 906 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.

The health unit has reported 3,772 variant cases confirmed to date, with 667 of those cases still active.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 10,918 cases of COVID-19 with 9,266 of those cases recovered and 231 cases ending in death. 

There are 30 people from Simcoe County and two from Muskoka District hospitalized with COVID-19, which includes one new hospitalization since yesterday.

To date, 214,691 people in Simcoe-Muskoka region have received their first dose of vaccination against COVID-19, which is about 34.4 per cent of the region's population. About three per cent of the population has received two doses of vaccine.

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified):

  • Wasaga Beach (2): One person between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 45 and 64 years old. One case is linked to close contact and one was outbreak-related. 
  • Barrie (26): Four youth under 18 years old, eight people between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, ten people between 45 and 64 years old and two people between 65 and 79 years old. Ten cases are linked to close contact, three are listed as community-acquired, and two were outbreak-related. 
  • Innisfil (9): One youth under 18 years old, two people between 18 and 34 years old, four people between 35 and 44 years old, and two people between 45 and 64 years old. Two cases are linked to close contact and four are listed as community-acquired.
  • Bradford West Gwillimbury (8): Two youth under 18 years old, three people between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Three cases are linked to close contact and one is outbreak-related.
  • Orillia (2): One youth under 18 years old and one person between 65 and 79 years old. One case is linked to close contact.
  • Severn (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose case is outbreak-related.
  • Midland (2): Two people between 35 and 44 years old. 
  • Georgian Bay (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old. 
  • Tiny (4): Two youth under 18 years old, one person between 18 and 34 years old, and one person between 45 and 64 years old. Two cases are linked to close contact. 
  • New Tecumseth (15): Five youth under 18 years old, five people between 18 and 34 years old, three people between 35 and 44 years old, one person between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Two cases are linked to close contact and two were listed as community-acquired.
  • There was one new case in Muskoka in Gravenhurst.t6
