14 Barrie residents among 51 new COVID cases in Simcoe-Muskoka today

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 51 new COVID-19 cases and no new deaths in today's update (May 19). 

There are 751 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.

In the Simcoe-Muskoka, 241 cases have ended in death since March 2020. 

Dr. Charles Gardner, medical officer of health for the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reported yesterday that two people have contracted COVID-19 and died more than 14 days after receiving one dose of a vaccine against COVID-19. 

The health unit has reported 4,241 variant cases confirmed to date, with 562 of those cases still active. Two cases have been confirmed as the B.1.617.2 variant strain, which is the one spreading across India right now. 

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 11,493 cases of COVID-19 with 9,953 of those cases recovered. 

There are 25 people from Simcoe County and two from Muskoka District hospitalized with COVID-19, which includes three new hospitalizations since yesterday.

To date, 257,955 people in Simcoe-Muskoka region have received their first dose of vaccination against COVID-19, which is about 42.7 per cent of the region's population and more than 50 per cent of the region's adult population. About four per cent of the population has received two doses of vaccine.

In Simcoe County, 225,914 residents (42 per cent of the population) have received one dose of vaccine, and 20,228 (3.8 per cent) have received two doses.

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified).

  • Wasaga Beach (1): One person between 35 and 44 years old. 
  • Clearview (4): Two youth under 18 years old, and two people between 18 and 34 years old. Two cases are outbreak-related. 
  • Barrie (14): Three youth under 18 years old, seven people between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, one person between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. One case is linked to close contact transmission, three are listed as community-acquired, and one is outbreak-related.
  • Innisfil (17): Five youth under 18 years old, two people between 18 and 34 years old, three people between 35 and 44 years old, six people between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Five cases are linked to close contact transmission and two are listed as community-acquired. 
  • Bradford West Gwillimbury (2): Two people between 35 and 44 years old. 
  • Orillia (3): Two people between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 35 and 44 years old. Both cases are listed as community-acquired. 
  • Oro-Medonte (1): One person between 35 and 44 years old whose case is linked to close contact transmission. 
  • Midland (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old. 
  • Tiny (1): One person between 65 and 79 years old. 
  • Penetanguishene (1): One person between 35 and 44 years old whose case is outbreak-related. 
  • New Tecumseth (3): One youth under 18 years old, one person between 18 and 34 years old, and one person between 45 and 64 years old. 
  • Essa (3): Two people between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 45 and 64 years old. 

The health unit does sometimes remove a case or move them based on further investigation of location data. The chart below reflects updated totals for each municipality as reported by the health unit on May 19).
