This fall, Mariposa Arts Theatre (MAT) is proud to present Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show at the Orillia Opera House, Nov. 10-13 and Nov. 17-20. Directed by Kaleb Sauve with book, music, and lyrics by Richard O’Brien, this production marks the return of large-scale musicals to MAT’s programming.

A cult-classic that has spanned generations, from the 1975 film starring Tim Curry to the revival stage production, The Rocky Horror Show is nostalgic for so many while remaining a powerhouse hit continuing to reach new audiences.

Featuring iconic songs such as Time Warp, Damn it Janet, Hot Patootie and more, the music is recognizable featuring stunning vocals and a rocking band under the musical direction of Christina Bosco. Paired with the non-stop energy of Sheri Nicholls’ choreography, bold set by Brian Halbot, and extravagant costuming by Erin Hawke, this show will feel more glam-rock concert than stage musical.

Michael Abernethy and Laura Bainborough jump into the roles of sweethearts Brad and Janet who come across an eerie mansion where they meet a creepy set of characters in Riff Raff, Magenta and Columbia played by Josh Halbot, Pam Sparrow, and Alyse Setten, respectively.

Ryan LaPlante dominates the role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, the maniacal and egotistical scientist working on his latest creation: a muscular man named “Rocky” played by Sam Wiles, in top form. Stephen Dobby duel wields the roles of Eddie and Dr. Scott, while Patrick Voo keeps the audience on track as The Narrator. The cast is rounded out by an energetic ensemble of Phantoms inhabiting the mansion, stuck in a mind-flip party of hedonism and hallucinations.

Beyond all the frenzied action and titillating performances, director Kaleb Sauve has centred this production around the core theme of “Don’t Dream It, Be It”. The Rocky Horror Show challenges societal expectations both for the characters in the show and for audiences, breaking through barriers of sexuality, gender expression, and identity.

While the language is dated in parts, the show has been a space for generations to express themselves, both in the audience and in the production process. “It has been such a beacon for the queer community to see themselves and celebrate their differences,” says Sauve. “Everyone is welcome in this show.”

Inspired by the era of cult-horror films and late-night double picture shows, The Rocky Horror Show finds a perfect home at the Orillia Opera House. The building served as a movie house for Orillia from the 1920s to late 1950s.

“It is great to see MAT back on the Lightfoot stage after a few years away,” says general manager Wendy Fairbairn. “We can’t wait for the excitement The Rocky Horror Show will bring to the Orillia Opera House.”

This cult classic is also notable for a history of enthusiastic audience participation, and while it's recommended to leave the props at home, ticket-goers are encouraged to dress up, shout, sing and dance! Join us on opening night on Nov. 10 for a post-show reception with refreshments and photo opportunities in the Orillia Opera House green room. On Nov. 18 there will be a special late show at 10 p.m. where the dials will be turned up three more points for a raucous night of fun.

Tickets are $30 and available through the Orillia Opera House box office, online or by phone at 705-326-8011. Follow @MariposaArtsTheatre on social media for more information about the show.

This production contains mature content unsuitable for young children, including sexual themes and language.

The Rocky Horror Show is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals.
