Christmas comedy filmed in the area coming to Oro-Medonte drive-in

Cup of Cheer will be screened at Sunset Barrie Drive-in this weekend

A parody Christmas movie shot in Orillia is coming to the big screen.

Cup of Cheer will be screened at the Sunset Barrie Drive-in in Oro-Medonte on Nov. 6, 7 and 8.

“We wanted to do a similar thing to what we did with All About Who You Know,” director Jake Horowitz said of his previous movie, which was also shot in town and had a screening at the Orillia Opera House. “We wanted to bring it to the community in a meaningful way. It’s been a horrible year, so we want to bring something funny to the people who helped make it possible.”

Cup of Cheer parodies the Hallmark style of Christmas movies. It stars Alexander Oliver and Storm Steenson in the lead roles.

It will be a double feature at the upcoming screenings. Cup of Cheer will be shown first, followed by Bad Santa.

During the first screening, Nov. 6, after Cup of Cheer, there will be a question-and-answer session with Horowitz, co-writer and producer Andy Lewis, Oliver and Steenson. Others might be added to the lineup.

As was the case with Horowitz’s first movie, Orillia played a central role in Cup of Cheer. It was filmed at various locations in town and featured many locals in roles as extras.

“Orillia’s always been hugely supportive. Everybody’s always so helpful and welcoming,” Horowitz said. “It’s been a tough year to be a filmmaker, so their support in coming out to the screening would mean a lot.”

After the screenings, Cup of Cheer will be available on video-on-demand services.

The movie is rated 14A, and Horowitz noted it marks a number of firsts for Canadian film, including being the first Canadian parody film and the first Canadian movie to have its release take place at a drive-in theatre.
