York-Simcoe MP Scot Davidson’s recent comments on the proposed Bradford Bypass are naive and misleading.

The planned Highway 400/404 link is ill-conceived and unnecessary. The original environmental impact assessment covering the planned roadway is hopelessly out-of-date and inadequate.

Many changes have occurred in the last 20 years since this fossilized document was produced. None of the emergent vital environmental issues and information are being considered or incorporated into what is needed: A revised study report.

In reality, there has been a groundswell of opposition among residents, commuters, farmers and other citizens to this highway plan. If the road link is realized, congestion on Highway 400 that is already experiencing over-capacity conditions much of the time will increase and the artery will be stretched beyond its safety limits.

The fact that Premier Doug Ford has ignored the province of Ontario’s protective legislation — namely, the Environmental Assessment Act  may have acted as an inspiration and a catalyst to other entities that are presently flaunting their opposition to the laws of this province.

It is time to put an end to the plans for the Bradford Bypass once and for all and get on with some enlightened transportation planning that will include foresight to better serve our citizens existing and future needs.
