Something for every sweet tooth: Andro Cakes cooks up hand-made treats (6 photos)

Pastry chef Dimu Perera and his wife, Rohini, opened their Dunlop Street East shop in December; 'We love the downtown community'

You don’t know whether to admire these treats or just get on with it and eat them.

Andro Cakes pastry chef Dimu Perera makes his tasty creations by hand.

He and his wife, Rohini, opened their Dunlop Street East shop  located across the street from Memorial Square  in December.

Looking to the future, the couple says their location is going to be great, she tells BarrieToday.

“We love the downtown community. Everyone is very kind and supportive,” Rohini says. “And we also love the downtown area. There are a lot of other great businesses.”

Despite the ongoing you-know-what, their business has been good, she adds.

“We find a lot of people come in after hearing about us by word-of-mouth,” Rohini says. “We do have some regular customers and we really appreciate their support.”

What’s not to support?

With scrumptious things like raspberry rose cake, chocolate pistachio glaze cake, cappuccino cheesecake, chocolate-dipped strawberries, truffles and key lime coconut tarts, there is something for every sweet tooth.

Then there are Dimu’s masterful and unique wedding cakes, works that "are never repeated."

Chef Dimu’s works of edible art utilize various mediums such as sugar, marzipan and chocolate and have earned him dozens of awards, including 11 gold medals from international pastry competitions, including the Culinary Olympics.

“Some of our customer favourites include our doughnuts, ferrero rocher cakes, cake pops and cupcakes, fried dough snowshoes, macaroons, and hot chocolate made with high-quality real chocolate,” Rohini says. “Some people also buy products for their businesses as well as corporate events.”

Everything in the shop is colourful — and edible  including images of photos and paintings that are incorporated into cakes that come in every shape imaginable.

“The colours we use are high-end edible colours, which we mix with different types of cream depending on the need,” Rohini says. “Most often it is butter cream. They are all natural ingredients. We don't use preservatives and everything is made freshly in-house.”
