A snow squall watch is in effect for Barrie.
Flurries and snow squalls today. Local blowing snow late this morning and this afternoon. Local amount 15 cm. Wind becoming northwest 30 km/h gusting to 50 this morning. Temperature steady near minus 6.
Here are the details of the snow squall watch issued by Environment Canada:
4:26 AM EST Tuesday 12 December 2017
Snow squall watch in effect for:
- Barrie - Collingwood - Hillsdale
- Midland - Coldwater - Orr Lake
Snow squalls are expected to develop. Under the snow squall bands, visibilities will be significantly reduced due to the heavy snow combined with blowing snow, and snow will quickly accumulate.
Conditions will become favourable for lake effect snow squalls this afternoon in the wake of an Alberta Clipper.
An Alberta Clipper will continue to give snow to the area this morning, with additional snowfall amounts near 5 cm possible. In the wake of the Alberta Clipper, strong northwest winds will develop with snow squalls developing this afternoon and tonight.
Snow amounts near 15 cm per 12 hours are possible in the strongest snow squalls. Local blowing snow is also possible this afternoon and tonight leading to reduced visibilities.
Snow squalls may continue into Wednesday.
Snow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably; changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.
Snow squall watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the formation of bands of snow that could produce intense accumulating snow or near zero visibilities.
