Tragic death toll at Roberta Place reaches 66 residents

Three more Roberta Place residents have died due to the COVID-19 outbreak as the deadly virus continues to tear through the long-term care home in the city's south end.

There are now 66 resident deaths since the outbreak at the Essa Road facility was declared Jan. 8 by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit. An essential caregiver associated with the home also succumbed to the virus, bringing the catastrophic number of deaths to 67 overall.

There are also 37 active cases among residents at the 137-bed facility.

Active positive cases among team members sits at 57, which is down from 69 reported on Monday.

Health officials have confirmed the presence of the B.1.1.7. variant, originating from the United Kingdom, inside the Barrie facility.
