Ontario reports 978 new COVID cases today, a new record daily high

Majority of new cases are in Toronto (384), Peel Region (170), and York Region (141); Six more people have died with the virus

Ontario Public Health is reporting 978 new cases of COVID-19 today, which marks a new daily high.

The previous daily high was Oct. 9 when 939 cases were reported in the province. 

Health Minister Christine Elliott says the majority of the new cases announced today are in Toronto (384), Peel Region (170), York Region (141), Ottawa (89), and Durham Region (51).

There have now been 69,331 cases in Ontario, of which 59,424 people have recovered, including 625 since the last report. 

Six more people have died, bringing the death toll to 3,086 since the pandemic began. 

Across Ontario, there are 6,821 active cases. 

Public health officials say 294 patients are hospitalized with the virus; 82 are in intensive care and 53 are on ventilators. 

In the previous 24-hour period since the last report, 44,151 tests were completed, bringing the overall total to just over 4.87 million. There are 30,922 tests that remain under investigation. 

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported a total of 1,232 cases of COVID-19, with 1,155 of those in Simcoe County. There are 1,035 cases listed as recovered. Four people are currently hospitalized. The health unit has recorded 47 deaths.

The incidence rate for Simcoe County is 219 cases per 100,000 people.
