Ontario Public Health is reporting 566 new COVID-19 cases today, which is down from Saturday's figure when 653 lab-confirmed cases were announced.
The province set a new record for daily cases on Friday with 732, although several cases had been added as part of a "data review."
Today's numbers include 196 new cases in Toronto, 123 in Peel Region and 81 in Ottawa, according to Health Minister Christine Elliott. Additionally, 62 per cent of today’s cases are in people under the age of 40, she said.
There have now been 54,199 confirmed cases in the province, of which 45,819 people have recovered, including 534 patients since the last report on Saturday.
There have also been four more fatalities due to the virus, as well as three more deaths linked to the data review, bringing the overall death toll to 2,975. Two-thirds of all COVID-related deaths in Ontario (1,949) have occurred in long-term care.
There are currently 5,405 active cases in Ontario, which is up from 5,380 on Saturday.
Since yesterday's report, 39,661 new tests have been completed in the previous 24-hour period, bringing the provincial total to just shy of 4.1 million. Of those, 78,953 cases remain under investigation, which is down significantly from 91,322 on Saturday.
There are 169 people hospitalized with COVID-19, an increase of 14 from Saturday. However, public health officials say they expect this may increase because several hospitals — approximately 35 — did not submit "daily bed census" data for Friday, Oct. 2.
Accordingly, the province did not provide any figures today for the number of people in intensive care or who are on ventilators. On Saturday, however, it was reported that 41 patients were being cared for in ICU and 23 people were on ventilators.
Locally, as of Friday, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit had reported 921 cases of COVID-19. There are now 786 cases listed as recovered. There are 94 active cases in the region. There are no hospitalizations reported on the health unit website. Thirty-eight people have died since the pandemic began.
