The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 120 new COVID-19 cases and no deaths in today's update, which includes case data reported to the health unit since Friday (March 12).
There are 390 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.
The health unit has reported 831 cases have screened positive and/or been confirmed with sequencing as variant cases, which is up by 80 cases since Friday's update. Of those, 170 are still active cases. Screening and sequencing tests can take several days, and sometimes results are not returned until after the individual has recovered.
Sequencing tests have confirmed 252 cases of the B.1.1.7 (variant strain that originated in the UK) in Simcoe Muskoka. There have also been seven cases of the P.1 variant that first originated in Brazil in the region and one case of the B.1.351 strain that originated in South Africa.
Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 7,001 cases of COVID-19 with 6,344 of those cases recovered and 192 cases ending in death.
There are 22 people from Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19, which includes four new hospitalizations since Friday.
The health unit has administered 55,927 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 in Simcoe Muskoka.
The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified):
- Wasaga Beach (2): A youth under 18 years old whose case is outbreak-related, and a man between 35 and 44 years old whose case is reported as community-acqured.
- Barrie (57): Ten youth under 18 years old, 21 people between 18 and 34 years old, 10 people between 35 and 44 years old, 11 people between 45 and 64 years old, three people between 65 and 79 years old, and one person over 79 years old. There is one more case with no age details provided. Two cases were outbreak-related, 10 were community-acquired, and 22 were linked to close contact.
- Springwater (2): Two men between 18 and 34 years old. One case was community-acquired.
- Bradford West Gwillimbury (14): Three youth under 18 years old, two men between 18 and 34 years old, two men and a woman between 35 and 44 years old, two men and three women between 45 and 64 years old, and a man between 65 and 79 years old. Six cases are linked to close contact, three to community transmission and one to an outbreak.
- Innisfil (15): Two youth under 18 years old, a woman between 18 and 34 years old, two women and two men between 35 and 44 years old, four women and two men between 45 and 64 years old, two men between 65 and 79 years old.
- Midland (1): A woman between 18 and 34 years old whose case is linked to close contact.
- Tay (1): A woman between 45 and 64 years old.
- Penetanguishene (3): Two men between 18 and 34 years old whose cases are outbreak-related, and one woman over 79 years old whose case is linked to close contact.
- Ramara (1): A woman between 65 and 79 years old.
- Severn (2): A woman between 18 and 34 years old and a man between 35 and 44 years old. One case is linked to close contact.
- Essa (4): Two youth under 18 years old, a man between 45 and 64 years old and a man between 65 and 79 years old. One case is outbreak-related, one is linked to close contact, and one was community-acquired.
- New Tecumseth (16): Two youth under 18 years old, a woman and five men between 18 and 34 years old, a man between 35 and 44 years old, two women and four men between 45 and 64 years old, and a man between 65 and 79 years old. Seven cases are linked to close contact and two are outbreak-related.
- Adjala-Tosorontio (1): A man between 35 and 44 years old.
- There is one new case in Muskoka located in Lake of Bays.
