Georgian College student tests positive for COVID-19

'There is no evidence of transmission (at the college) in this situation, at least not yet,' says medical officer of health

A student from Georgian College's Barrie campus has tested positive for COVID-19 and a second person has been asked to self-isolate.

Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit's medical officer of health, Dr. Charles Gardner, confirmed late Wednesday afternoon the positive case was a student.

“It is a student and this one individual tested positive after seeking out testing. They weren’t sure if they had symptoms or not,” said Gardner. “Through an interview we were able to identify one other individual who is a close contact and is now self-isolating.”

The situation is not being treated as an outbreak which, according to Gardner, is defined as there being “evidence of transmission at the site.”

Gardner said others “have been identified who are low-risk contacts who have been advised to self-monitor.”

“They are a contact at the college and they are self-isolating,” said Gardner. “There is no evidence of transmission (at the college) in this situation, at least not yet.”

BarrieToday reached out to Georgian College for comment. They provided this statement:

“A member of the Georgian Barrie campus community has tested positive for COVID-19,” the statement read. “The college is working closely with the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU).”
