Four more residents have died from COVID-19 at the Roberta Place long-term care home in south-end Barrie, which has been decimated by the UK variant of the virus.
In addition to to the death of an essential caregiver linked to the Essa Road facility, this brings the tragic death toll to 45 people who have been associated with the outbreak. This is up from 41 fatalities overall reported Sunday.
As of 1 p.m., Monday, the long-term care home has also seen 127 positive cases among residents — which is all but two people residing there — and 86 positive tests among team members, both of which are unchanged from Sunday.
BarrieToday received the Roberta Place information from correspondence that was emailed to a residents' family.
The outbreak at the 137-bed Roberta Place long-term care home was declared on Jan. 8., with the first death coming the following day.
On Saturday, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit confirmed the presence of a highly contagious variant, known as B.1.1.7, inside the Roberta Place long-term care home.
On Sunday, local medical officer of health Dr. Charles Gardner said he's "fully convinced" that all of the Roberta Place deaths and confirmed cases linked to the facility are from the UK variant.
