Barrie Families Unite collects summer clothes for local families

'We were filling a void and fulfilling a need we were seeing arise via posts and conversations on our page,' says organizer

Barrie Families Unite continues to bring the community together through sharing and communication, this time with a successful clothing bank for kids.

The Facebook group was created on March 14, shortly after the COVID-19 health crisis began to shut down businesses in the city.

Barrie Families Unite (BFU) was created to help people communicate needs, whether it be food, services or other items. The group has 9,500 members.

Last weekend, the group completed a kids clothing drive that was organized to get clothes to those who need them most.

The group’s creator, Nikki Glahn, told BarrieToday that the event was put together to accommodate the need for families to have access to summer clothing for growing kids.

“It was last Saturday and we accepted donations for three hours and then laundered all the donations, sorted into size and then filled requests that had come in from the BFU community in the week leading up to Saturday,” said Glahn.

Over 35 families and more than 70 kids received a delivery of summer clothes.

Glahn praised programs in the community like Glowing Hearts Give 'n Get, that haven’t been able to open their doors for the last two and half months.

“We were filling a void and fulfilling a need we were seeing arise via posts and conversations on our page,” said Glahn.

Donations were dropped off, hot water-washed and sorted at Sonder Studio and Events in Barrie’s east end.

Barrie Families Unite will be working with the Glowing Hearts to coordinate filling the few holes that were left due to not having the right size/gender clothing donations to match.
