The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 144 new COVID-19 cases and two deaths in its update today, which includes all cases reported to the health unit since Friday, Feb. 19.
The two deaths reported today were both men over 80 years old whose cases were linked to the outbreak at Bradford Valley Care Community. Both died on Feb. 20.
According to the health unit, 171 local cases have tested positive for the B.1.1.7 variant that originated in the United Kingdom and an additional 187 cases have screened positive and are awaiting confirmatory testing.
Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 6,242 cases of COVID-19 with 5,457 of those cases recovered and 186 cases ending in death. There are 556 active, lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the region, with the majority of those in Simcoe County.
There are 25 people from Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19. There have been five new hospitalizations since yesterday's update.
The health unit has administered 34,146 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine against COVID-19 in Simcoe Muskoka to health-care workers in local hospitals, long-term care and retirement homes, as well as to all eligible long-term care home residents. The health unit reports more than 15,000 people in the region have received both required doses of the vaccine.
The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified):
- Collingwood (2): A man and a woman between 18 and 34 years old whose cases are attributed to community transmission.
- Wasaga Beach (2): Two women between 18 and 34 years old whose cases are linked to close contact.
- Barrie (77): Ten youth under 18 years old, 46 people between 18 and 34 years old, five people between 35 and 44 years old, 14 people between 45 and 64 years old, and two people between 65 and 79 years old. Five cases are outbreak-related, eight are linked to community transmission, and 31 are linked to close contact.
- Bradford West Gwillimbury (23): Six youth under 18, seven people between 18 and 34 years old, five people between 35 and 44 years old, four people between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Eight cases are linked to close contact, one is outbreak-related, and two are attributed to community transmission.
- Innisfil (11): Three youth under 18, four people between 35 and 44, three people between 45 and 64, and one man between 65 and 79 years old. Three case are linked to close contact, three were community-acquired, and two are outbreak-related.
- Orillia (2): Two women between 18 and 34 years old. One case is attributed to community transmission.
- Penetanguishene (8): Two people between 18 and 34, two people between 35 and 44, three people between 45 and 64, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. All eight cases are outbreak-related.
- Tay (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old.
- Tiny (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old.
- Essa (2): One person between 18 and 34, and one between 35 and 44.
- New Tecumseth (9): Two youth under 18, a person between 18 and 34 years old, four people between 45 and 64, and two people between 65 and 79. Four cases are linked to close contact.
- There are six new cases in Muskoka, including four in Huntsville, one in Gravenhurst and one in Bracebridge.
