Key Deliverables

  • Coordinate work activities across the operation to ensure a strong degree of operator focus, synchronization and articulation between functions, work stations, operators and other departments.
  • Supervise employees and work activities to ensure a strong degree of focus, synchronization and articulation of the shift activities and requirements.
  • Support corporate customer service and shipping objectives.
  • Reports to Superintendent and takes direction from area Front Line Supervisors to be able to address concerns in areas of Shipping and Transportation as required.
  • Coordinate cross-functional flow of product and process with other operating departments.
  • Ensure effective shift-to-shift communication of performance, including environmental/safety and maintenance issues.
  • Supervise on shift processes and operating areas
  • Develop direct reports, providing performance feedback and appraisals.
  • Leadership and accountability for shift performance in Transportation and Shipping (Mobile, Tracks, Switching, Yards, Marine).
  • Monitor mill production schedules to forecast and communicate operating issues to maintain stability of operation.
  • Monitor department safety, environment, cost, quality and production operating variables and adjust as required to allow for stable and consistent operations.
  • Monitor on shift application of ISO procedures and standards.
  • Identify and support employee development and training activities as directed by area Front Line Supervisor.
  • Support the achievement of operating objectives and targets and monthly budgets by coordinating area-to-area activities and ensuring effective communication to operating personnel.
  • Identify and recommend process improvements related to people, processes or equipment
  • Support peers and cross-functional teams to ensure decision-making optimizes resources and supports process continuity.
  • Analyze operating data to identify trends and recommend appropriate corrective action.
  • Support the current health & safety and environmental program.
  • Accountable for instructing, monitoring and correcting health and safety, and environment requirements on shift.
  • Identify and address labour relations issues, especially as it relates to work performance, work conduct, attendance and punctuality. Document and verbally communicate labour relations issues to Superintendent in a timely manner.
  • Interface with cross-functional colleagues to achieve consistent and on budget operating results, in line with targeted production and quality objectives.
  • Identify and communicate area maintenance priorities to Maintenance / equipment Front Line Supervisors at daily maintenance / operations meeting.

Core Competencies and Skills Required

  • Minimum diploma in a technical discipline with supervisory experience in a transportation or rail operating environment.
  • Preference will be given to candidate's with DZ or AZ license with minimum three (3) years related experience and/or CROR certification.
  • CROR certification must be achieved within 12 months.
  • 0-8 hoisting ticket, track inspection certification and experience with fleet management systems are considered assets.
  • Motivated, energetic, adaptable, detail oriented self-starter with a strong sense of ownership.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving/decision making abilities.
  • Proven ability to lead multiple and changing priorities under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal, organizational and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge and commitment to Health, Safety and Environmental policies.
  • Possesses an understanding of operational processes and continuous improvement processes.
  • Strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office (email, word processing, spreadsheets, project scheduling) and business planning platforms such as SAP.
