Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announces new benefit, additional supports for post-secondary students Wednesday

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced the Canada Student Response Benefit, a $9 billion fund for post-secondary students who do not qualify for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit. 

Eligible students will receive $1,250 per month from May to August, with all payments from Canada Revenue Agency being made retroactive to May 1. 

Students who care for others or live with a disability will receive $1,750 per month through the new benefit. 

Trudeau says $291 million of the announced funding will go towards extending scholarships, fellowships and grant for student researchers and graduate students for a period of three to four months. 

The Canada Student Service Grant will see eligible students receive $1,000 - $,5,000 for doing volunteer work in repsonse to the COVID-19 pandemic.  

The prime minister says that grants for students will also be doubled for the 2020-2021 academic year.  

In all, the federal government anticipates the creation of 76,000 jobs for students this summer as a result of Wednesday's funding announcement.
