Innisfil council has thrown its support behind two events that will bookend the summer.

The 2024 editions of Onion Fest and Gussapolooza were declared municipally significant events during a meeting of council. The move is mainly a formality that assists event organizers with securing a special occasion permit from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), which would allow for alcohol to be sold and consumed during the events.

The items were included on the consent list for council consideration and moved forward without debate.

The third annual Onion Fest is scheduled for June 21 to 23 at the Innisfil Recreational Complex. It is organized by Innisfil Community Events (ICE) Corporation.

It’s one of the many events ICE puts on each year and follows the tradition started first by Summerfest and continued by Ribfest. The weekend is a celebration of Innisfil and one of the crops that has sustained its farmers since settlement began in the area more than 200 years ago.

Onions remain a vital part of the agricultural industry in Innisfil today, as one of the largest onion farmers in Canada is located in the municipality.

Onion Fest will feature three days of live entertainment on its main stage, a midway, local vendors and lots of great food and drink options. For more information, visit innisfilonionfest.ca.

Since 2017, Gussapolooza has been a can’t-miss event for lovers of up-and-coming local musicians. What started as a backyard event in Gilford has evolved into a three-day festival that takes over the Georgian Bay Steam Show grounds in Cookstown.

The 2024 edition of Gussapolooza takes place from Sept. 13 to 15, with more than 60 independent musicians from across Simcoe County and all over Canada coming into town for a weekend of music most people have never heard before, but no doubt will soon enough.

The festival is not only designed for music discovery but also for like-minded artists to meet and network, sharing notes and learning what they can do to help take the next steps in their music careers.

Tickets are on sale now for the 2024 festival, with free tent camping included with every weekend pass purchased. For complete details, visit gussapolooza.com.
